Review of 5th Passenger (2018) by Ed D — 09 Jul 2018
It's a little bit Alien, a little bit Black Mirror, but make no mistake; 5th Passenger is it's own very unique monster. The brain child of a group of very creative and dedicated independent filmmakers, 5th Passenger finds star, co-writer and co-producer Morgan Lariah at the helm of a cast that includes David Lim and a number of Star Trek alumni including Tim Russ, Marina Sirtis, Doug Jones, Armin Shimerman and Manu Intiraymi.
The year is 2151. Earth is in the throes of a cataclysmic event. And the cast of characters or on their way to a habitable planet when their vessel is destroyed. With five characters on an escape pod designed to sustain four lives, the characters fight amongst themselves in a desperate struggle to stay alive long enough to find rescue.
For an independent film with a limited budget, it does a remarkable job of hitting all the right notes. It juggles tension, horror and a healthy dose of humor very effectively. The cast is remarkable, fully embodying their respective roles and giving the story the emotional weight it needs and deserves. Director Scott Baker shines behind the camera, bringing out the best in the cast, the story and the scenery. The majority of the film takes place within the confines of an escape pod, but there is an entire world within that escape pod that Baker and the cast bring to life.
The crew aboard the escape pod are in for a wild ride. Climb aboard and join them if you dare.
