Review of 54 (1998) by Kyle E — 19 Nov 2007
Not the disaster I was bracing myself for, 54 manages to come out as a coherant film that is quite obviously the product of two different versions. It's a shame that we won't see the Mark Christopher version, it might have lived up to the promise of 'Gus Van Sant does Saturday Night Fever', instead this homosexual-free version is a stale-Boogie Nights.
But 54 is enjoyable, and not only that, but it has some good performances. Philippe looks the part for the lead, his mix of beauty and brood suits the shallow nature of the film. Hayek is mis-cast, but manages to come out okay regardless, but its Mike Myers who really shines, delivering an actual performance that transends the material.
