Review of (500) Days of Summer (2009) by Jacob B — 30 Sep 2012
This isn't the kind of movie that breaks box office records. This isn't the kind of film that people watch on a date all of the time (usually generic romantic comedies). This is a film that feels real.
The story revolves around an idealistic young man who believes in true love and falls for a girl. This girl doesn't believe in true love. This film is set up with a warning to the audience. The ending isn't typical.
It is a realistic take on the consequences of beliving in true love in the modern world. Relationships are flaky and change constantly. This is reflected quite well. We are treated to the story that jumps forward and backward frequently.
This allows us to appreciate the irony that we never see in our own failed relationships. We know what is coming. We see all of the signs. Yet, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's interpretation of this character is so gripping and relatable that we still feel for him despite his mistakes.
Zooey Deschanel does an excellent job playing a character who would be very easy to dislike if it weren't for her. She makes us appreciate the character even though she hurts the protagonist in ways that many will find all too familiar.
The script is witty, whimsical, and wonderful. The humor is not for all. It is a subtle form of humor that many wouldn't appreciate at all. If you enjoy movies about real relationships, then this is for you!
