Review of (500) Days of Summer (2009) by Jimmy M — 13 Oct 2012
Hopless romantic boy, Gordon-Levitt, meets girl, Deschanel, who doesn't believe in love but this is NOT a love story. Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt have impeccable chemistry; they're funny, depressing, lovable and genuine.
One of most original and best movies I've seen in awhile. The film manages to capture the very real feelings of the highs in lows in relationships by painting them with the most interesting and surreal fashion; like a musical number or non-diegetic interviews on love or a split screen of Levitt's expected idea of a situation and the reality of it.
The great thing is none of these things seems forced as the films non-linear plot jumps from day 1 to day 290 back to day 5 of their relationship making any creative story telling tool seem natural.
