Review of (500) Days of Summer (2009) by Natalie F — 20 May 2014
I have to be careful to not punish this film for other's lack of understanding: this film wasn't a love story, it was an exploration of a highly self involved character and his simultaneous deification and demonisation of a girl he picked to centre his life around. This heady task was mastered wonderfully, and when I watched it I was pleased that it didn't pull punches in showing how 'Tom' was the one that needed to change. You can imagine me chagrin when I realised everyone else was mad at Summer... The best way to understand this film is to read the following quote by Godron-Levitt:
"He develops a mildly delusional obsession over a girl onto whom he projects all these fantasies. He thinks she'll give his life meaning because he doesn't care about much else going on in his life ... That's not healthy. That's falling in love with the idea of a person, not the actual person.".
In all, a great film, great characters, it's a shame about the way it was received.
