Review of (500) Days of Summer (2009) by Jacob D — 07 Sep 2012
Time. What is it? it is something that when we truly realize how profound of an impact it can have, it gets ripped away from us. Yeah, "Time flies" but not just when were having fun. time moves on when things are crappy and when we wish for a do over, we don't get one.
(500) Days of Summer takes this and runs with it. The (supposed) autobiographical story of Tom and Summer will make you laugh and cry. It will make you hate life and how unfair all of what happens is. Zooey and Joseph have amazing chemistry, and that's why the film is so enjoyable to watch. It's more romantic drama then comedy, yet it will make you laugh, due to some amazing star power and great lines. The film never strays to far from realism or to close to the ordinary, yet you never fell like it's melodrama. Yes, the characters do make some rash decisions, but you fell bad for them rather than going, "Well, why'd you do that?" Except for the cases where, you're supposed to go, "Well, why'd you do that?" The music, as with the rest of the film would be appropriate as a sad, british pop band's 'Breakup" soundtrack, or as an upbeat 'I feel fantastic' vibe. The film never strives to be something it's not. And what it is is a great, heartwarming story about a boy, a girl, the ways they interacted, and why they may or may not have fallen in love. It's a simple as that. 5/5.
