Review of (500) Days of Summer (2009) by Ahmed A — 01 Nov 2012
I watched this with my friend Shaun over at the CineArt Empire at the 9:15pm showing going in with knowing it's a love story but not a love story movie. The movie clocked in at 1 hour and 28 minutes via stop watch.
It's a very sweet down to earth believable tale of a guy who relives the memory of his love during the span of 500 days with a female whom he believes he's found the "one". Now let me try to get set this straight...
How is it when a guy whom he believes has found the "one" does everything a respectable guy does ends up getting screwed over by what the female does by using his words against him?
Female: "It's fate that lead me to him...".
Male: "But you said you didn't want a relationship... and you don't believe in love, it's a fantasy. Thus we stayed as friends...".
Female: "Things just happened that way and it felt right...".
Male: "Yet I said the same to you and you said you don't believe in fate.".
I'm not trying to be biased or sexist... but seriously by the end of the film I "hated" the situation since it's very similar to the situation I am right now in life. Not to mention I rarely ever "hate" anything with such a passion...
Though I got to admit... I have a much stronger will power than what the character portrayed in this film. As much as I love a person... I'd never go by my hormones and jump into bed with a female that isn't certain of her love for me. Even with my ex-girlfriend... I wasn't sure and I've never regretted with my judgment.
Don't get me wrong I love this movie... I can really relate to it. But does ever bring it close to home on how I feel for one important person in my life. It's just now a matter of time before she too perhaps will pull this crap on me and I'd just nod and shrug it off as if I've known all long. Just got to live my life and wait until that happens and move on with it. Timing is all that matters and some things aren't just meant to happen even if I've put in 500% of my efforts on her...
