Review of 50 to 1 (2014) by Mandy B — 12 Apr 2014
The story of Mine That Bird is one that should be seen by everyone who loves to see the snobs lose. Even though the outcome is known, it is the journey that is important. Skeet Ulrich as Chip Woolley inhabits a man who is fighting for a final shot at success.
His passion for horses runs deep. Christian Kane as Mark Allen is great. The comic bits are sometimes very subtle and sometimes very obvious. Kane's portrayal made a giant in racing human. I cannot wait to see Maddie Deutch in other projects as her jockey was a woman dealing with prejudice in a man's world who retained her own dignity and self-respect.
I am so grateful that Jim Wilson and Faith Conroy were determined to bring this underdog story to life. It is a local story for me; Sunland Park is only 25 minutes from my place. The crowd in the theater cheered and clapped after Mine That Bird won and at the end of the movie.
We all need to be reminded that dreams can come true and that perseverance does pay off. I heartily recommend this movie to all who want to smile and watch a bunch of underdogs-human and horse, succeed in a world that doesn't want them.
