Review of 50 First Dates (2004) by Jordan K — 06 Apr 2015
Some consider 50 First Dates to be the last good Sandler movie - I consider it to be the beginning of his downfall era. With a poor, repetitive, and tiring story, Sandler's unlikable and unlikely character gets old - not to mention Rob Schneider's overused stupidity.
Adam Sandler is a Hawaiian man known for ditching women after their first date - when he does actually fall for one, he learns she has no short term memory after a fatal car accident, as he attempts to still be in love with her and repeat every day.
The plot is unlikely but entertaining nonetheless, and Barrymore's performance is somewhat strong - those are the only real pros. Sandler's character comes off more as a creep than a caring boyfriend, and Barrymore's on-screen dysfunctional family gets old and unneeded, such as her jock-like but wimpy when nobody's looking brother Doug - most of the jokes revolve around him wetting his bed, getting hit with things, the characters get old fast and Barrymore's character Lucy is the only one worth liking. It's not bad considering Sandler's career in later years but it's flawed, predictable, and most of all old as it goes on.
