Review of 50/50 (2011) by Sean G — 18 Nov 2012
Okay, so I finally watched this film and it is top notch. My fears were unfounded, though 50/50 hits very close to home. Having been through an experience with cancer that is very similar to that of the main character of the film, there are moments in this film that are poignantly familiar and accurate. When Levitt's character tells his therapist that he has never felt so calm I began the cry, as I remembering feeling the same thing after my diagnosis, and now missing that feeling.
Making the film hit home, for me in particular, even harder was that this film was made in my home town of Vancouver, in places that I see weekly, if not daily. And further more, while the hospital in the film is unfamiliar, the signage is the same and very familiar.
Even without the ridiculous personal relevance, 50/50 is a very good, poignant film with a wonderful performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It is an accurate insider view of the the broad range of confusing emotions and tough situations that are involved in being sick and facing mortality.
