Review of 50/50 (2011) by William J — 01 Jan 2013
Cancer sucks, I'm pretty sure that's a truth we can all agree on. Whether you've had a family member or friend affected by it or not, it's a sad topic. So, making film and television about it is always a risky move, but 50/50 pulls it off impeccably. 50/50 is sad, it's powerful and it's a little depressing at times, but it's not a downbeat movie.
The point I feel 50/50 is trying to make is that people aren't defined by cancer. Yes, it sucks, but it's not the end, our family members who suffer from it can, and we hope will, recover. Life, ultimately, is a magical thing, and in life, as in 50/50, we should let the good outweigh the bad. The film is funny and sweet - helped by its strong cast, particularly its main trio of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anna Kendrick. Be happy; cancer's just a word after all.
