Review of 50/50 (2011) by Eric C — 30 Mar 2013
This was one of my favorite movies of the past couple of years. I related to JGL in many ways (SPOILER: although hopefully I don't develop cancer and only have a 50/50 shot of survival and hopefully I don't have an annoying ginger GF who cheats on me.
.) and SR reminded me of my buddy from high school with his inappropriate yet humorous comments and antics. And I love Anna Kendrick. The way she tries to seduce JGL but then doesn't because it would be unprofessional but secretly still harbors feelings for him so instead she plays quasi-hard-to-get - it's just classic girl behavior.
A very surprisingly funny movie given the subject matter of cancer and death, 50/50 captures the human element of life that so many movies (especially those of the indie hipster variety) try to ram down our throats while failing.
This movie crushed it. When the first few chords of Yellow Bedletter started to play, I got a huge grin and realized I had just seen one of the best movies of the early part of this decade.
