Review of 50/50 (2011) by Bill G — 31 Mar 2013
50/50 is a unique and well-made film that does a great job of blending comedy and drama.
Based on true events from writer Will Reiser, this movie tells the story of Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a young man who discovers he has cancer. His best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) is there to support him, but his girlfriend crumbles as the crisis unfolds. 50/50 follows Adam's transformation and how hard it is to deal with his health situation.
As mentioned before, this film does a fantastic job combining different elements. There are some funny moments scattered in with the serious aspects of the story, which is a really successful formula. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of Hollywood's finest young actors, and he really shines here in a role that would obviously be challenging for anyone. Seth Rogen (who I usually find very annoying) works well here too, providing some much needed comedic relief.
As great as this movie is, it isn't flawless. For a film that is about cancer, I expected to be a little more emotionally drained when it was all over. I do think the ending fell a little bit flat and wasn't as good as it could be. This is just a minor nit-pick though, and doesn't change my thoughts too much. I also would have liked to see Adam be a bit more distraught, like any other young person with cancer would be. The character is surprisingly calm throughout most of the film. Again though, these are just small things. Overall, 50/50 is an entertaining and good-hearted film. 4 stars.
