Review of 50/50 (2011) by Matthew S — 01 Jun 2015
Joseph Gordon-Levitt's painfully realistic performance is what makes really makes this film rise to be a truly potent movie. While the comic elements are funny and fairly realistic, I don't think there is anything extraordinary to be found here.
There is a particularly touching moment captured between Gordon-Levitt and the great Anjelica Huston that is very brief but uncomfortably realistic moment where the main character reaches out to his mother -- and she responds.
As the deceptively comical film comes to a conclusion that is somehow simultaneously cliched and a surprising blunt realization that the future offers no promises. Gordon-Levitt's skill as an actor is what provides the bluntness and realism.
