Review of 49 Up (2006) by Alicia C — 21 Dec 2007
Such a compelling concept, but ultimately it was unable to hold my attention to the end of the film. One would expect some extraordinary outcomes - but many seem to end up in some form of middle-class mediocrity.
There are some oustanding exceptions, some truly moving life situations, but I think I've had enough contemporary scenes of happy, squirming children/ grandchildren and long walks on the beach. The mundaneness of it all is, I suppose, a strength of the film.
Life isn't always car chases and drug-addicted, poverty-stricken sob stories.
