Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Alan Scherstuhl (679) for Village Voice (8,525) on 26 Dec 2013

This Hungarian-shot bore is so indistinct it reeks of no place more than Hollywood, where the fascinating specifics of history and legend are…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Robbie Collin (1,612) for Daily Telegraph (UK) (2,495) on 26 Dec 2013

A fairer title might have been Ronin in the Gloamin…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Nigel Andrews (1,359) for Financial Times (1,822) on 26 Dec 2013

Kenji Mizoguchi's original movie (1941), based on true events in early 18th-century Japan, is a classic. This one is a dud that can barely walk…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Frank Swietek (3,473) for One Guy's Opinion (3,473) on 25 Dec 2013

In their quest to give the classic story international appeal, the makers have turned '47 Ronin' into an extravagant live-action comic book…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Kenji Lloyd (14) for HeyUGuys (1,461) on 25 Dec 2013

A completely unique take on the Chūshingura tale, this account of the 47 Ronin creates a beautiful mix of legend and mythology, but without…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Michael Nordine (446) for Willamette Week (516) on 25 Dec 2013

A curious folly, albeit an almost endearingly sincere (and strange) one that seems to revere its legendary source material as much as it distorts it…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Jim Judy (1,199) for Screen It! (1,437) on 25 Dec 2013

For a movie about disgraced samurai reassembling to take down the villain, this is a fairly boring and far too long (2+ hours) slog to sit…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Simon Abrams (730) for RogerEbert.com (5,563) on 25 Dec 2013

In spite of its enjoyable, easy-to-exploit aspects, 47 Ronin is a big budget spectacle hamstrung by its need to be at once flippant and respectful…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Brian Orndorf (4,059) for Blu-ray.com (2,093) on 24 Dec 2013

It's a mute-button movie, with passages of gorgeous cinematic craftsmanship. It's too bad the rest of the effort blocks the view…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Sarah Dobbs (23) for SFX Magazine (298) on 24 Dec 2013

Any story that's been passed down through several generations is likely to have been embellished along the way, but this adaptation of a Japanese…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Roth Cornet (42) for IGN Movies (1,472) on 24 Dec 2013

Mildly entertaining and gorgeous to look at, 47 Ronin has little beneath the surface to recommend it. There are a few good fights, though…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Jack Giroux (142) for Film School Rejects (1,198) on 24 Dec 2013

The camerawork is claustrophobic with too many close-ups, fast cutting, and dim 3D, and stylistically the movie fails to set itself apart from…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By John Nugent (191) for Sky Cinema (1,726) on 24 Dec 2013

Ultimately, this vision of feudal Japan seems to fall somewhere between a graphic novel and computer game…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Joe Neumaier (1,294) for New York Daily News (5,623) on 24 Dec 2013

In the monumentally dull 47 Ronin, Reeves mumbles monosyllabic claptrap between dull action scenes…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Keith Uhlich (870) for Time Out (7,510) on 24 Dec 2013

The basics of the story remain unchanged, but it’s the wanna-be-blockbuster additions that rankle, be it the incoherent direction of first-time…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Sara Stewart (700) for New York Post (6,650) on 24 Dec 2013

There’s little sense of urgency, or — oddly, given the film’s title — of scale…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Nicolas Rapold (488) for The New York Times (9,847) on 24 Dec 2013

47 Ronin can’t entirely paper over the void at its center, traceable partly to the shadowboxing of computer-aided filmmaking or studio tinkering…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Mark Olsen (451) for Los Angeles Times (12,977) on 24 Dec 2013

Rinsch, making his feature debut, shows the shortcoming of someone coming from the image-based world of commercials and advertising…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Luke Y. Thompson (1,447) for The Robot's Voice (149) on 24 Dec 2013

What sucks is that the production design and the creatures look really cool, and a quest narrative set in this world could have been a lot of fun…

Review of 47 Ronin (2013)

By Claudia Puig (2,080) for USA Today (4,117) on 23 Dec 2013

While the visuals are lovely to behold, this unremarkable version of the classic 18th century Japanese legend is stiff and uninvolving…
