Review of 47 Ronin (1994) by Aaron B — 16 May 2014
A lot can be said about this film but I will only go over a few points. It's not your typical bad movie but it's obviously a very misguided movie. Having such mopey and depressing samurai's as the protagonists was a very bad idea in my opinion. And having them hate on the main protagonist out of simple racism was an even worse idea.
The best part of this movie is definitely the cave scene where it goes over kai's backstory. And the best fight scene is the first fight with the giant samurai dude. However, the rest of this movie is incredibly dour, depressing, and boring. By the end of this movie, you will probably find you dislike both the good guys and bad guys pretty equally.
If you make a soul mate movie, don't have suicide be the reason 2 people cannot be together. Samurai or not, it's so devoid of logic and passion that it makes you hate it. I mean seriously, Kai goes through all that to rescue the woman he loves, but then he's going to let the people who mistreated and made an outcast of him dictate what he must do and who he can be with?
