Review of 47 Meters Down (2017) by Daniel R — 15 Jun 2017
Remember the scene in "Jaws" when Richard Dreyfuss dives down into the water at night to check out the wreck of Ben Gardner's boat? Remember how abso-freaking-lutely scary that was when the payoff of Ben's head popping out of the boat made you jump? That scene was 5 minutes long and terrified the world.
"47 meters Down" is basically an hour of that which starts off terrifying, but soon becomes exhausting. Mandy Moore and Claire Holt are excellent as the two sisters in peril but are handicapped by the limitations of the situation presented.
The story is also handicapped by the "narrative" of Matthew Modine's Captain Taylor, who radios warnings to the sister's while they wait to be rescued. Every warning is immediately followed by one of the characters doing what he just told them not to do.
One of his last warnings pretty much blows the drama out of the climax, but it's still a decent shark movie, much like Blake Lively's "The Shallows" was last year.
