Review of 44 Inch Chest (2009) by Jim J — 15 Feb 2010
This isn't a bad film despite being more like a play with a few cinematic tricks. I might have even enjoyed it is not for the patently misleading advertising.
The evil marketing ruined it. It's advertised in it's trailers as somehow a continuation of the story started in the excellent Sexy Beast. The protagonist is Ray Winstone and is Colin. Ian McShane looks a lot like Teddy Best and it looks to be some dark crime drama. Oh boy! Sexy Beast II!
It's not. Not even close. What it is is a dark psychodrama about a marriage gone south and the protagonist is looking for someone to blame. It's loaded with great actors (Tom Wilkinson, John Hurt), playing colorful characters. It has it's moments... but I found myself distracted waiting for the Sexy Beast link. By the time I figured out this was a different beast entirely I was mad and distracted.
Go see it if you want to see a dark psychodrama set in London's crime underworld that's not a bad film. A bit of a snooze and merely mediocre.
