Review of 44 Inch Chest (2009) by John S — 03 Mar 2010
OK This film was a disappointment in some respects for me. I knew the premise of the film having seen Ray Winstone on Jonathan Ross already and was expecting good things.
The start of the film is promising. The story takes place in a disused flat that looks like its in South London, the 5 main characters have captured a man who was having an affair with Colin's wife. They intend to kill him. The night before he had taken a beating and now he was being set up to be murdered.
In the end of course it doesnt work out that way and there are a series of crappy dream sequences and nonsensical flashbacks to previous events along with a few snippets of samson and delilah - the relevance of which I didnt get. The acting is good - John Hurt especially as a thoroughly dislikeable old man but the story falls apart if I am honest. I also felt it may have left something on the cutting room floor. At 90 minutes it could have given me a bit more.
On the whole though it was good enough watch and the likes of McShane and Wilkinson did their careers no harm with this tale.
Could do better from the director though - we didnt learn much from this film.
