Review of 44 Inch Chest (2009) by Leigha P — 10 May 2010
The trailer's make it look like a quick, fast paced, clever romp in the style of most modern British gangster flicks. Well the suave and cool characters of "44 Inch Chest" certainly fit the bill, but the film goes in a totally different direction.
It's minimalist, moody and rather unnerving as Ray Winstone's main character becomes more and more detached from reality. The premise is simple, his wife's secret lover's kidnapped and Winstone's going to kill him, but as the night goes on the film focuses more and more on Winstone's unbalanced state.
It's much more of an inspection of the male psyche than I would've expected but I enjoyed it and have to say it's one unique, entertaining piece of Brit cinema.
