Review of 42 (2013) by Caleb V — 21 Aug 2013
Great sports movie to add to the starting lineup, but this one will still be batting ninth behind Major League, Field of Dreams, The Sandlot, Babe, The Natural, A League of Their Own, The Bad News Bears and 61.
Stirring Biopic show the trials an tribulations of Jackie Robinson breaking the sport's color barrier, along with his relationships with Branch Rickey, Pee Wee Reese and the rest of the Brooklyn Dodgers.
While the story was a "paint-by-numbers" inspirational sports tale, the wardrobe, set pieces and shooting of this movie was fantastic, it drew me right in to 1947 without a second thought. Even though John C.
McGinley's part as Red Barber was small in this movie, come awards season he deserves a few Best Supporting Actor nods for a spot on portrayal of the famous announcer. He's really the finishing touch in making this a great period piece.
