Review of 42 (2013) by Dann M — 31 Aug 2013
The biopic 42 is an inspiring sports drama, but it's mired in propaganda. The film follows the attempt by Brooklyn Dodger general manager Branch Rickey to integrate the MLB by signing Negro league all-star Jackie Robinson, and how they battled against prejudice.
Unfortunately, the writing is rather poor and doesn't really provide an in-depth look into Rickey or Robinson. The characters feel more like stereotypes than real people, and this takes away from the impact of the story.
While it's entertaining and moving, 42 plays it safe and ends up being formulaic and by-the-numbers.
