Let me begin by saying, Harrison Ford deserves an Oscar Nominee. His performance as Branch Rickey is not only powerful but more than believable. He manages to make Branch a sympathetic character who wants to stand up for what is right and he knows it.
On the other hand he is brilliantly complemented by Chadwick Boseman who brings Jackie Robinson to life. Watching the 42's strife I felt a sense of pride and appreciation for what men like him had to endure and how they had to carry themselves.
Ultimately I do not see the movie as just a reflection of the times but a lesson to people that you must use your skill as a weapon and not violence. Beat oppressors with success. Let your game do the talking.
