Review of 42 (2013) by Dragonsfoe . — 18 Jul 2014
42 is an inspirational and great biopic. It excels in almost everything.
The story follows Ranch Ricky's (Harrison Ford) journey to change Major League Baseball by adding a black man to a "white-man's game." While looking through profiles he finds Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) and recruits him to play on one condition. Not to fight back against racist comments. With the help of Jackie's wife Rachel (Nicole Beharie) and the likes of Wendall (Andre Holland) and Leo (Christopher Meloni) Robinson is destined for greatness.
On the positive side 42 is a very inspirational biopic. Often pointing out racism in the mid-20th century. This makes the movie interesting. Another positive thing are the great baseball scenes which is sure to entertain. As always Ford has good acting but the real standout is Boseman, the rookie who has a great future ahead of him.
On the negative side there is not that much. Only that there is a lack of heart. But besides that the movie was great.
Overall it is very inspirational but with a lack of heart this movie is a worthy Jackie Robinson biopic.
Rating: 7.6 (B).
