Review of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) by Rafael T — 16 Mar 2011
An astounding film that would be understood much more by Romanians but makes you ponder just as much as an Irish person on laws regarding abortion. And it is a film that allows you to ponder often as many moments are laboured with uncomfortable silences.
The subject matter appears quite disturbing on paper but there is an admirable efficiency in the way the film is presented and acted that makes it bareable to watch. It emanates with shocking realism and leaves you in considerable lament over the conditions these women had to endure as less-than-wealthy dorm students in late 80s Bucharest.
You can't but admire the strength and resilence of the lead character (Otila), whether she is keeping face at her boyfriend's parents dinner table beside their sniggering middle-class friends or by doing the utter thankless in order to allow her friend a hopeful future.
