Review of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) by Michael W — 21 Aug 2008
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is one of the most intense dramas of the last year. The story is relatively simple. A girl and her friend have decided to attempt a black market abortion, only to run into problems. Set in Bucharest during the Communist times of the 1980's, 4M3W2D absolutely startles viewers. It's an all out serious film. The two lead actresses are rather exceptional and their roles. Cristian Mungiu's unique style of directing definitely shows off here. There are a lot of times where the camera isn't moving at all and just sitting there, as a spectator. For example, the dinner scene. The camera is acting like someone silently sitting at the table. Mungiu's brilliance to set up suspense off screen also shows up. *SPOILERS* When the abortionist wants some other than money, the camera follows the girl who is not currently partaking in the event. We the viewer know what is going on but don't see it. This is something that is not utilized often enough. In most cases the director might go too far in actually showing the actions thinking that might be the best way to portray things. Mungiu lets the viewer decide for themselves as to what's happening, leaving it open for worlds of emotion. Another example is the whole last 30 minutes or so of the film. When she doesn't answer the phone, we are left to assume what is going on with her. I personally happen to love this dynamic of film. *END SPOILER*.
Overall, 4M3W2D is one of the better films of the last year and is highly recommended. It's an intense story of these young peoples struggles in this certain situation. Check it out.
