Review of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) by Neil K — 20 Nov 2008
This is a real gem in recent European cinema. The plot is relatively straightforward but the complexities surrounding the procurement of illicit abortions in communist Romania and the emotional agonies suffered by both the principal protagonists are beautifully presented, acted and filmed.
Its also brilliantly photographed, capturing the grey grimness of Romanian life perfectly. Expertly directed with text book use of both moving and stationary camera shots to build tension and let the audience get inside the characters' emotions.
If you appreciate intelligent cinema about social problems and the human condition, and appreciate film technique too, its well worth seeing.
