Review of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) by Tom B — 01 Apr 2010
Uncompromising depiction of a young woman helping her roommate get an illegal abortion in Cold War Bucharest. The story gets off to a slow start, but makes use of long camera shots to build a sense of discomfort throughout.
The most effective scene is a dinner party that Otilia attends at her boyfriend's house immediately following the procedure. The camera remains on Otilia the entire time, her discomfort growing, as the attendees discusses Romanian family life and changing behaviors.
She says almost nothing in this scene, but Anamaria Marinca's performance here makes the film.
