Review of 35 Shots of Rum (2009) by Private U — 13 Mar 2009
Daughter lives w/ father keeping house, postponing striking out on her own. Sound familiar? Ozu did it brilliantly and often. The director, Claire Denis, pays homage to the great Japanese filmmaker, but doesn't fully translate the storytelling to modern day, multicultural France.
The cast, though, is wonderful: Alex Descas, Mati Diop, Nicole Dogue and Grégoire Colin.
