Review of 3:10 to Yuma (2007) by Lucas K — 23 Oct 2011
After you read the names of the two leads of this film, does it come as a surprise that this movie is well acted? Russell Crowe and Christian Bale's performances alone could have made this movie watchable. Lucky for us, there's even more to this film than their amazing performances.
At it's core, this movie is about two characters. Through these two characters lie the entirety of the film's significance.
These two characters are completely different from each other. There's Dan Evans, who believes in hard work, dignity, and honor, even if these values end up with him finding money very hard to come by. There's Ben Wade, who takes a very naturalistic view of the world. "Whatever I want, I take it," he says in the film.
The whole film centers around these two characters, and through them, this film is able to show us a lot. Amongst the many issues shown here include different people working together towards a common goal for a greater good, the importance of parenting/setting good examples, the exploration of how people grow up to be who they are, the subject of sacrificing yourself, and moral dilemmas. Apparently, this is a film that has a lot to say (and a lot which could be analyzed), and it mainly says it through the fascinating characters of Wade and Evans.
However, you might need to remember that this film is first and foremost about the characters and the character development. Because, frankly, the action scenes are very average. They're not horrible, but they're just not going to be the thing keeping you at the edge of your seats. Personally, I might even consider this movie more effective as a drama than an action film.
Regardless of whatever you want to call it, though, this is a great movie about people in general. The story told here could be applied to anybody, anywhere, any time around the world. It's a film about people struggling with their humanity, and I'm a sucker for those kind of films. It's very good, I won't hesitate to recommend this one.
