Review of 3:10 to Yuma (2007) by Nick N — 03 Nov 2012
More of a traditional western than I expected, but 3:10 to Yuma, was still very entertaining. All the performances are strong, but obviously Russell Crowe stole the show here with his villainous Ben Wade character. The story, setting, and script don't do really anything new or exciting to the Western genre and though they are done well, it's really the interactions between Christian Bale and Russell Crowe that breathe life into this movie. It's really interesting to see Bale play a semi-pathetic character, trying to be a real man and provide for his family, while also having this strange back and forth with Crowe's character and the juxtaposition is really cool to see.
Other elements of the movie are strong, all the supporting characters are fun and well acted, the ending is pretty fantastic, and the action is plentiful and very entertaining. Though all those things are done well, the movie doesn't do much to stray from the pack.
PROS: Interaction between Crowe and Bale's characters, great cast, entertaining.
CONS: Nothing really too different or groundbreaking.
