Review of 3:10 to Yuma (1957) by Meghan S — 25 Mar 2012
Yes, there are girls who like westerns. This was one of the BEST western I've seen in a while. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing Unforgiven, but I'm putting it on my Netflix. Also will have to the original 3:10 to Yuma to my list, too. But this remake should not be over looked.
3:10 to Yuma is an elegant well paced movie, and if that last comment doesn't sound like high praise see and recent Pirate movie. It wasn't totally forthcoming with character information either. This is also a good thing in retro-spec, because in a classic western one know why the bad guy is bad and the good guy is good. No gray, which newer westerns have wallowed in. The only detraction from this movie was something that old westerns were great at, smart-ass tention breakers.
The performances by Christian Bale and Russell Crowe were flawless. The former isn't one who most would peg for a western type, but as the down trodden rancher Dan Evans, Bale makes his suffering noble and elegant. Crowe's charismatic and hypnotic performance as the outlaw with a heart of gold, was truly inspired.
See this movie, even if you've never seen a western, it might just surprise you.
