Review of 3:10 to Yuma (1957) by Trevor R — 03 Apr 2013
The central story of a young boy torn between two father figures is nicely developed for most of the run time, but any thematic coherence that had been built up crumbles underneath the confused, tragic ending.
The trappings of the action genre are also a hindrance, bringing in some complicated and unrecognized moral issues that would have been better served by a slower and more deliberate approach. But, "3:10 to Yuma" is still entertaining and features truly great set pieces.
The cast is also excellent: Bale as a lonesome ex-soldier, Logan Lerman as the rebellious son, Crowe (Clearly enjoying himself) as a calculating outlaw, and Ben Foster as a wild sociopath. They're larger-than-life character types, but they work.
