Review of 300: Rise of an Empire (2014) by Brent R — 25 Jul 2014
This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It's funny to say that because this work ends up being exactly what it wants to be...yet, it never had any intention of being a movie. Forget the plot; there really isn't one.
The pretense that this is based on the Battle of Salamis is rather like putting a bow-tie on a gorilla. This is more or less a loose collection of highly stylized scenes. The blood is extremely exaggerated.
Each sword stroke slings about one quart into the air. Yes, that's crazy. So, is fighting in a cape with bare chest and no armor other than a shield and helmet. Triremes ramming at speeds of 20 mph is also rather silly.
And, I have no idea why they wasted so much time with Xerxes who is nothing but a throw-away character. He doesn't figure in the plot at all. The best I could say for it is that if you look carefully, you can see fragments of what could have been a good movie.
If they had not pretended that this was based on history, if they had gotten rid of the airborne streams of blood, the rape scenes, the gratuitous violence, the flying embers, the dark clouds, the bare chests; and concentrated on the characters, this could have been something worth watching.
Alas.
