Review of 300: Rise of an Empire (2014) by Mark M — 18 Oct 2014
Not even close to as good as the first and mostly for 2 reasons. 1) No Gerard Butler 2) No Michael Fassbender. But aside from that, it just doesn't have the same oomph as 300. The naval battles are impressive and the final battle is one to watch.
Yet the movie feels incomplete, more like a companion piece that'd you'd have on the Blu Ray than a sequel you would release in theaters. The backstory they give antagonists Xerxes and Artemisia interesting backstory.
What saves this movie from being a complete turkey with one really cool naval battle, is Eva Green. She is far and away the star of this pic. She is evil and sexy and sympathetic, at least that's what you feel for her despite her evilness.
I would've followed her too, just like the 1 million Persian troops as well as their god-king.
