Review of 300: Rise of an Empire (2014) by Lenny R — 02 Nov 2014
Nowhere near as good as the original, but interesting in its way. The naval battles get a bit samey, and the fact that all the blood is CGI means nobody ever gets any spray on them, despite the ridiculous amounts of it that splash everywhere.
The cast are all fine, both the newbies and the veterans, though Lena and Weno both look about eight years older than in the original (for some reason) and Stapleton, whose plummed-up Aussie oratory has echoes of Rustius Maximus, is pretty solid, but lacks the charisma of Gerry B.
Really, this is Eva Green's movie; she brings depth and an element of humour to her performance that don't seem to have been scripted, and her purry voice is the perfect conductor for Artemisia's vitriol.
