Well I finally saw it. And it was pretty much as I expected. It's a weird mishmash of the homoerotic and the homophobic, the characters are wooden and the scenarios are predictable. Yes, it does look gorgeous and yes, they use CGI very well, but that's the best you can say for it.

I didn't mind the colouring but the lighting was down-right annoying at times. And yes, I know it's just an action film masquerading unsuccessfully as an historical epic, but when your lead character has an unmistakable Scottish lilt it rather takes you out of things.

I also don't understand why they made Persians dark-skinned, monsterish or- like Xerxes- queeny. In the end, I might have been able to put all the weaknesses aside were it not for the stunning predictability.

The constant foreshadowing is about as subtle as a rubble massage and just makes you wonder why it's there at all. I guess it's just lazy writing- and that's the major problem with this film.

It's all style and no substance.
