Review of 300 (2007) by Renzo V — 03 Mar 2014
"LEONIDAS, KING OF THE SPARTANS".
- '300' is a 2006 fantasy action movie from director Zack Snyder (Man of Steel, Watchmen, based on the comic books by Frank Miller and Lynn Valery who were inspired by the historical Battle of Thermopylae. The story is (too?) simple: 300 half naked six-packed Spartan soldiers go to war against the invading and much larger army of the Persian king Xerxes. The whole film has a very likeable comic book feeling: the slow-motion fight scenes and the CGI blood spatters are cool. I also like the monstrous adversaries. In its cast we see Gerard Butler (Law Abiding Citizen), Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) and Rodrigo Santaro (I Love You Philip Morris). A sequel is momentary playing in the theatres. '300' is a guaranteed popcorn movie.
When the giant Persian king Xerxes (Santaro) invades Greece with his large army, Leonidas (Butler) who is king of Sparta assembles 300 of his well trained soldiers to join him into battle. Leaving his wife Gorgo (Headey) and son behind, Leonidas and his men head to the shore. There they meet Ephialtes, a hunchbacked exiled Spartan, who wants to join them, but is considered not fit enough. While the Spartans battle against the monstrous troops of Xerxes army, Ephialtes who feels hurt goes to the camp of the enemy to offer them his help...
