Review of 300 (2007) by Gregory S — 09 Jun 2017
A very enjoyable war movie that I have found eminently re-watchable. There is witty dialogue and some memorable scenes. The story is loosely accurate historically and my pet peeves with it revolve around how accurate.
The Spartans in reality would have been wearing chest and leg armor which is what made them so hard to kill against lightly armed Persians. But of course armor gets in the way of physique. There were 5000 Greek forces by all accounts, including 100 Spartan slaves, of which 300 were the elite Spartan core that stayed and sacrificed itself on the last day as a final delaying action.
Not including the slaves is a missed opportunity meant to glorify the Spartans more than they deserved. While the immortals were the Persian elite forces, they were called that due to the fact that whenever a division got destroyed in battle the Persian King would immediately reconstitute it back home.
If you like a thrilling action movie done in an epic style, good memorable dialogue, a war movie with lots of graphic violence, immersion into an ancient historical setting, and a reasonable plot with some thought provoking content then I strongly recommend this movie.
