Review of 30 Minutes or Less (2011) by Wes L — 20 Dec 2012
I think it was a fundamental mistake to make this a foul mouthed Apatow-style comedy. The obvious inspiration is Fargo, but that film had a darkly comic tone that suited the material. Here, the funny bits clash with the seriousness of the underlying story - it's difficult to laugh at long riffs and detours when there's a bomb strapped to someone's chest.
None of it is very compelling and there's hardly any laughs. It has a basic level of competence and that's about it.
