Review of 30 Days of Night: Dark Days (2010) by Graham C — 03 Sep 2012
Good: Vampires look pretty cool, the ending is something I wouldn't expect.
Bad: A lot of things. The plot, the characters, the villains, the writing.
I loved the first installment of this film, it was one of the better vampire movies I had seen come out in the recent time. This however was a giant disappointment. I was hoping they would not make a sequel, and I am sure they are wishing they hadn't either. Where to start with why this film sank. The plot is so cliche, everything about it is. The characters are completely flat, I didn't care remotely what happened to them. There was no one I could identify remotely with; the viewer knows nothing about them for the most part. The villains are somewhat scary, the sounds they make are good. But the queen vampire, what a stereotypical way in which Mia Kirshner plays the role. And the final battle between vampire and human, what an absolutely dull and stupid scene. The place where the vampire doesn't look is completely obvious, especially when the human gives away their location completely, and the vampire still doesn't figure it out! Then it seems like after the final battle the writers had no where to go, so they just made it as simple as they could. You will see what I mean if you watch the video, which I am telling you not to. The ending is somewhat surprising I guess, at least compared to the rest of the film. I think the biggest problem with this film is that they seemed to know how they wanted to start the film, and they had a twist at the end, but they had no idea how to keep the rest of the movie going. So they just filled it with boring shooting. One of the worst horrors I have seen in a good time.
