Review of 30 Days of Night (2007) by Adam T — 08 Nov 2010
It certainly isn't the greatest vampire lore out there, but there is a surprising twist to the genre that keeps this movie afloat. Sure, the vampire language falls a little flat, and the screams feel a little too Ringwraith from LOTR, but the fact that these bloodsuckers show up just as a small Alaska town sets in for a sunless month is invigorating.
Plus, it sticks fairly close to the traditional vampire lore - where they don't sparkle, but rather die in a fiery blaze when the sun comes up. Josh Harnett (Lucky Number Slevin), Danny Huston (Edge of Darkness), and Ben Foster (The Messenger) actually work pretty well in this movie that sort of pays homage to "The Thing", and it's surprising that director David Slade (Hard Candy) went on to direct said sparkly fare after this film.
He should have stuck with the vampires who actually appear vampiric, as opposed to the emo ones.
