Review of 30 Days of Night (2007) by Josh G — 03 Dec 2010
'30 Days of Night' is a 2007 American horror/thriller movie based on the comic book/graphic novel miniseries of the same name. The film is directed by David Slade and stars Josh Hartnett, Melissa George, and Danny Huston, the story focuses on an Alaskan town beset by vampires as it enters into a thirty-day long period without sunshine.
The director David Slade made a brilliant movie, while it's not the best directories of a Vampire Movie but I like how he captures the killings full on (goes all guts with it) & the way he follows the vampire and survivors is good, while having one my favorite moment of David Slade directions in the movie was which is the upper air of the town when the vampire start attacking all the town folk & you see it happen (like looking at a road map, but with people dying from vampires & had a smile on my face from seeing red blood splattered on the sown), the acting by Josh Hartnett as Sheriff Eben Oleson (did a ok/plain job as his character, not his best though), Melissa George as Stella Oleson (did a perfect show case as her character, but could have done better), Danny Huston as Marlow (which he did a excellent job as the head of the vampire group/cult), Ben Foster as The Stranger (did the best performance in the Movie has he show both character & emotion), Mark Boone Junior as Beau Brower, Mark Rendall as Jake Oleson, Amber Sainsbury as Denise, Nathaniel Lees as Carter Davies & the rest of the listed cast in the film were all pretty well acting, but seemed all stale most through the film.
The Movie has some great fighting from the vampires & some great scene but there are some scene that are just wasteful to the movie & its style based on the comic book/graphic novel, I really did like the death out of this movie as they just made it full on gory, sick, bloody, violence & gutsy to make such a bloodthirsty vampire movie which I thought was cool, but has no creative intakes just full on gore & head ripping (no a romance or serious Vampire Movie), with the atmosphere in the Movie being very dark, depressing, grim & having that feeling of not much hope for the survivors it really fanatics in this movie setting of that atmosphere (which makes it great). It has its moments of jumpy , thrilling, creepy & terrifying moments, but doesn't offer much of a scary vampire movie, just more on the disgusting side (which I think they missed the mark of making it scary) and for its storyline it showcase on the whole dark town for the whole 30 days (a month in ever words) & dose focuses on the group of survivors & the group of the Vampire attacking the town which it was a decent/brilliant take on the story as it kept me mostly interested on emotion & blood splattered.
I thought the make-up artist was really well place to graver on the character of the vampire & the blood, guts & head ripping off was mostly good, but did look alot visual then creating & the special effects were pretty amazing and really loved the whole dark (quite gothic) visual effects that were used in the set of the movie (which I loved the teeth that the vampire's have as it must be easier to eat us with because they looked sharp), I thought the texture & style was cool & unique for the movie setting which was pretty awesome on its showcase towards the movie, it sound effects were fucked up on the sound that they picked for the film which dose help it seem more creepy/scary and I have to say the movie dose bring some emotion depth into the movie, but with not much of the character depth in the film.
It must be the freakiest & fucked up 30 days of the lives (and who every survivors will need serious mental help after that ordeal) and I would not want to live anywhere like that small town every!!! Period and the ending of this movie had some shock & a bit of a twisted or turn of events towards the movie, but the very last scene to me (which is a never favourtie of main of David Slade directories towards the movie) seemed more on the capture of the beautiful show of the sun rising up and that the relationship between Josh Hartnett & Melissa George characters was the last moment of love & forgiveness which I just loved it & was very beautiful, sad & somewhat upsetting to watch when Josh Hartnett character that was turning in to ash at the end of the movie.
(OH and for having '30 Days of Night' on two disc special edition, I really thought the special feature where very entering & was happy to see what they did & how they did the movie really, very well done special feature. Also the Movie does have some hinted blends of element theme & back ground source of John Carpenter 'Assault on Precinct 13' & 'The Thing'(Remake), with George A. Romero 'Night of the Living Dead' which dose work well together in this good Vampire Movie.).
