Review of 3 Women (1977) by Jesse L — 20 Apr 2004
(DVD) (First Viewing, 7th Altman film).
A thoroughly odd and unsettling film- I feel numb more than anything. Certainly Altman's creepiest film, 3 Women is an homage to Bergman's Persona, and there are many similarities between the two, but I have to admit that this one made more of an impact for me (though I've been waiting to see Persona again- release the fixed DVDs already!). I really have no idea what to make of it, but it's a fascinating study on identity, imitation and personal boundaries.
The new DVD is Criterion's usual first-rate job, and I'm planning on giving Altman's commentary a go tomorrow as I've heard it's very good. Will report back then. And now I'll spend the rest of the night trying to figure out what the heck this was all about.
