Review of 3 Days to Kill (2014) by Tiana J — 05 Apr 2015
3 Days to Kill is one of those films that does not know what it wants to be. It all over the place and the thing as a whole is underdeveloped.
So, Kevin Costner (like Liam Neeson, apparently) is a dangerous international spy, who is determined to give up his high stakes life to finally build a closer relationship with his estranged wife (Connie Nielson) and daughter (Hailee Steinfeld). But first, he must completer one last mission by Amber Heard- even if it means juggling the two toughest assignments yet: 1) hunting down the world's most ruthless terrorist and 2) looking after his teenage daughter for the first time in ten years while his wife is out of town.
After explaining the plot, that plot is everthing that I have seen before. And yes, Neeson did it so much better (no offense to Costner). Like I said before, 3 Days to Kill is a film that does not know it what it wants to be. It does not know it wants to be an action film, a comedy, or a family film. It just all over the place. Not to mention, most of the comedy does not work at all and the family drama is not developed at all.
Director McG amazes me. Why you might asked? Because in my opinion, he is not a good director. He is more of a music video director than a film director. And speaking of music videos, 3 Days to Kill is more of a music video than a actual film. Sometimes, that is not a bad thing but in case of this McG film, it is a bad thing. After watching This Means War, Terminator: Salvation, and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, he should stick to directing music videos. And did I forget to mention that the first Charlie's Angels is his best film? But hey, it is my opinion and plus I did not see We Are Marshall.
The cast does a good job from what they are given (especially Costner and Steinfeld) although their characters are not well developed. The acting for the most part is pretty decent despite the fact that Amber Heard is over-the-top. However, I did not mind that to a certain extent.
Look, overall 3 Days to Kill is not a terrible film but it is a pretty bad film. It really is not worth your time or money. However, if you want to buy this film, I suggest you renting it first. Otherwise, skip it at all costs.
