Review of 28 Weeks Later (2007) by Sosa M — 11 May 2014
There are SO many things wrong with this film, from the small and picky to the downright stupid. I'd love to just list them all, but I won't, maybe another time...
A lot of the acting is bad, the characters are dumb and it's a film that doesn't quite know what it wants to be. It goes from gritty horror to thriller, and from action to unintentional comedy, it's all over the place.
But its not all bad, there are some good performances amongst the poor ones, and the first ten minutes feels simply like an improvement on the original; this part of the film really is very special, it made me hopeful that this could be close to a horror masterpiece! But no, it's not. It's nowhere near.
28 weeks later has virtually nothing on 28 days, it addresses no subtle philosophical points looked at in the previous film that could of been expanded on in so many great ways, instead it chooses silly action and thoughtless writing. This really doesn't deserve the rating I've given it, but it's guiltily entertaining and there are some decent aspects to the film that in some cases outweigh Danny Boyle's original, and I'm really glad they kept the awesome music.
Let's just pray they don't go and make '28 Months Later', right?
