Review of 28 Days Later (2002) by Amy C — 03 May 2012
This movie gets a place in my top 10 favourite movies for many reasons. Many people state that it's "not that scary" or "there aren't enough zombies", but this is what draws me to it so strongly. This movie isn't meant to be a typical zombie flick: Rather it's a refreshing look at humanity and how it would conceivably react to a major epidemic.
The biggest strength of this film (and there are many!) is the soundtrack. You won't find intricate orchestras melodies on this score. The songs are delightfully simple, creating as much atmosphere and discomfort in silence as they do with actual music. The use of "East Hastings" by Godspeed You Black Emperor is the best example of this, as it creates a feeling of emptiness, anxiousness and frustration with simple notes and melodies.
It was a smart decision to use relatively unknown actors in the casting. This helped remove the need for any "convincing" that would ultimately have been distracting if someone known in Hollywood were to play the role of Jim or Selena. They are simply people who's journey you are curiously watching. You know as little about them as you do about the scenario that is unfolding as you watch. It allows for raw and understated performances that match the tone of the movie beautifully.
