Review of 28 Days Later (2002) by Mloy X — 04 Jan 2014
Jim's Mother: [written on a note to Jim] With endless love, we left you sleeping. Now we're sleeping with you. Don't wake up.
Horror flicks aren't normally my genre of choice but I kept seeing bits and pieces of this on telly every so often that I figured, I might as well take a gander because it looked interesting enough plus I do love "The Walking Dead" and they mentioned the unique method the director used in filming this movie in the documentary "Side By Side (Can Film Survive Our Digital Future?)"; so, why not? Turns out this was truly a good film. It's not as gory as most horror flick and the story focused more on the people-- the survivors, instead of the killing. I mean, don't get me wrong, the body count in this flick is nothing to sneeze at but just like TWD, it looks at the struggles and challenges people have to go through, the changing of morality and social conduct and the real scary aspect of the film, the deterioration of civilized society. Cinematically, this movie did have an interesting perspective, a lot of distant, bird's PoV; a lot of somewhat unfocused or something clear then goes a little out of focus type of camera work-- it kind of reminds me of war footage. It's pretty raw and gritty. I can honestly say, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.
