Review of 27 Dresses (2008) by Annalu A — 19 Apr 2011
This movie is terrible. Now, before you ladies get on and attack me, hear me out. This movie is bad for you guys, look this is terrible. This movie might as well begin by saying "Ladies, if you are not married, you are worthless!" Look, I know the central theme of this movie isn't about getting married, like the event, its more about who you get married to but still... The subtext is there, read in between the lines and it very degrading in my opinon.
Anyway, onto the story, this girl Jane Nichols (Katherine Heigl) has been a bridesmaid 27 times and its central struggle is watching her sister getting married. Now, mostly when guys know a girl has been a bridesmaid they run for the hills but Kevin (James Marsden) is charmed and captured by Jane. However, he is a reporter in the marriage section of the newspaper and wants to be a more serious reporter, knowing of Jane's numerous bridesmaid experiences he begins to do a report on her.
As you can see, a very paper thin plot.
Now I honestly don't mind Katherine Heigl, I dont think she is anything specail but she is a pretty talented young lady and she may yet surprise me (FYI I wrote this review years ago... Nothing... She is a waste of screen time). But damn, the real star of his movie is James Marsden. He is so good in this and the real sad part is that he isn't even really in this film, but when he is, the movie goes from ok to good. However, its not really enough in my opinion to keep it a float. Heigl and Marsden do look good together and they have good on screen chemistry, but like I said, its not enough and there are so much bad actors in this film to fill in the time, its horrible.
Let me say, the director of his movie is bloody insane. The writting is bad, the characters arent that real to relate to and gar. Its just sucks.
But I have to say something postive, I dont wanna just say "This is some ol' bullshit". Its bad, but its not that bad. Yes, you do laugh a little, and yes, James Marsden is great in this film, and yes, the girls are gonna enjoy this film, and yes, Katherine Heigl is a fine looking girl, so its not that bad. Not that bad, but still, it is bad.
